PROFILE

Born 8/14/1970 in Kochi City as the second son of a family that runs a woman’s clothing store, a small town business closely associated with the community.
Both parents having day jobs, I would spend a lot of my time on my own, often daydreaming. Replicating animal pictures and random scribbles are my first memories of drawings and selling them to the clients of the clothing store are my first memories of earning money from it. I was never really handy with the paintbrush but instead I would put down a whole lot of energy into each stroke, which earned me a grand prize at the prefecture exhibition for a portrait of a girl in my class.
Kochi prefecture, surrounded three sides by mountains giving somewhat of an entrapped feeling, the only opening is the Pacific Ocean on the southern border. Its horizon remains to me an indelible scenic memory that brings yearning for a world outside.
From the 80’s to the 90’s, deeply involved in the revolving cultures and fashion in Japan, the counter-culture, punk, new wave and alternative rock still remain as immense influences on me.
Admirations for Katsuhiko Hibino’s cardboard art lead me to a design school in Osaka. Majoring in product design gave me wider perspectives in forms, concepts and the fundamentals of things. Inspirations at that time were Jackson Pollock, Julian Schnabel, Frank Stella and Marcel Duchamp. Junk, conceptual and ready-made art were what was going on. I started creating sculptures from driftwood and wire. The key concept was ‘organic’. At that time, life and death became a theme I grew more and more drawn to.
From 1991 to 1993, I was employed in a lighting display company dealing with neon lightings and was involved in product development. During my working years I participated in a neon-art exhibition run by EGL and received a prize for my sculpture made of driftwood and neon lights. After leaving my job, I traveled and drove across the US in a convertible. The cinematic scale of the new land and the drama, days like a road movie turned my life around.
After returning, I moved out to Tokyo and joined a rock band as the bass player. Studies on rhythm, melody, tone and groove were to later reflect on my drawing style. At the same period I started bartending at an iconic club in the middle of Tokyo where the underground culture was in bloom. I would cross passes with so many inspirational people there and did several exhibitions in clubs and other nightspots during that time.
In 2005, I stayed in NY for 2-month due to my art project.Gathering comments on my works at galleries got me participating in an underground gallery exhibition. I was moved by the understanding and generosity of the people towards art in NY.
Back in Tokyo, a portrait I drew by crayon gets critically acclaimed. This incident made me recognize that drawings/ paintings were an efficient way to express what I wanted to and I was determined to pursue this style.Works portraying deformed human faces were somewhat of a reflection of the inner-self. The creation process felt like the interior of the subject crawling out and haunting me, and my hands were moving apart from me. These works went into store displays and some ended up as collaboration t-shirts with apparel brands.
In the spring of 2001 I came to know that I had malignant lymphoma. During the 10 years of fighting off this disease, I experienced dramatic changes in my health and survival rate. This made me seriously consider how the rest of my life would be and gave me a strong desire to be remembered through my works. Life and death, existence, themes that penetrate throughout my years of creation, really started to make sense, which somehow lead to enlightenment that helped me overcame my sorrow. It was the sprout of a consciousness for symbiosis, breeding, reflection also Japanese values such as reincarnation, polytheism and subtleties plus the musical concepts such as static and dynamic states, reverberation and resonance all became a part of my expression. Some of my works during this period were used as cover-art for books and CDs.
Later on I developed a technique I named ‘Shigure =drizzling’ and started working on a series project. These works are all titled with one letter of the ‘Kanji’ (the Japanese script) accompanying the English title. (Ex. ‘Shikabane, Remains’; selected for the Ushiku Biennare 2012) In 2014 I did a solo exhibition for the series titled ‘Kodama’ meaning reverb or reflection.

(Comments)
‘Shigure = drizzling’ is a technique similar to ‘dripping’ or ‘action painting’ used by artists such as Jackson Pollock in the 1950’s, intentional splashing and dripping of the paint is used to draw. Each random dot of paint is relevant on the canvas and like waves, and are meant to brings awareness to human existence, society and historical phenomenon. The concept came to mind staring at the ground while the raindrops wet the asphalt, which immediately connected to the music I was listening to at that point, electronica, noise and shoe-gazer, as if the stereo image, words, emotions and inspirations were granted embodiment.
The name ‘Shigure = drizzling’ is derived from the process and sound the paint makes while covering the canvas.
